The Monastery of Fonte Avellana

Situated at 700 metres on sea level on the declivity of Mount Catria, in the place already chosen in the 10th century by some hermits as their dwelling. It inspired Dante Alighieri, who probably was guest there, and who cited the monastery in the 21th canto of Paradise, in his Divine Comedy. Built at the end of the first christian millennium, abbey in 1325, it was promoted to Basilica by Pope John Paul II who visited it in 1982 to conclude the millennium celebration.
