Cagli
Founded in February 1289, it had already been a much more ancient centre. Dominated by the Umbri (Umbrians) until 265 b.C., its original name was preserved (Cale) during the Roman era. In 219 b.C. the consul Flaminio paved the road (from which the name Via Flaminia). Bishopal seat already in 359 A.D. Destroyed by fire during the strifes between Guelphs and Ghibellines in 1287, it was refounded on the model of the town of Ascoli. In 1353 it fell under the dominion of the Montefeltro, and since then the destiny of Cagli was united to that of the Dukedom of Urbino.
In 1463 the Duke Federico gave order to the military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build a fortress on the hill where there's now the Convent of the Capuchins, connected to the Torrione (the donjon) through an underground passage. The Torrione and the walls of Cagli, together with the Portals of that era, are today a potent cultural attraction.
Many events take place in Cagli, from the Holy Week Procession, where each district parades with the own hooded penitents, to the Palio dell'Oca, to the summer cultural and gastronomical Fridays, to the "distinti salumi", an occasion to taste local specialities.
