The Sentiero Italia and the WWF oasis Bosco di Tecchie
(source: Comunità Montana del Catria e del Nerone: www.cm-cagli.ps.it)
There's a long "green road" which runs through Italy along the Appennini range: the Sentiero Italia (Italy Trek). Arriving at the Bocca Serriola pass, it enters our territory at Acquapartita, in the area of Mount Nerone (1525 mt).
Complex and fascinating mountain, Mount Nerone offers numerous naturalistic environments. An imposing network of treks (C.A.I.) favours many easy trips, from the valley creeks to the flowered pastures. Among the meadows on top, in the shade of the beech-tree woods, numerous caves open, frequent destinations of speleologists. The forre, striking canals under water dominium, mark its sides and offer themselves to more expert hikers.
The Sentiero Italia is also an excellent occasion to know the cultural value of the places touched by it: Apecchio, Piobbico, Serravalle, Pieia, Pianello, Cagli, Cantiano, Chiaserna.
The stop post of the area is in Pieia, 10 minutes from the Agriturismo Ranco di Sopra.
Destination of naturalistic expeditions, the Bosco di Tecchie (Tecchie Woods) occupies an extension of about 180 hectares covered mainly with turkey oak- and beech-tree woods.
It has been instituted as public park in 1986 with the contribution of the naturalistic associations WWF and LIPU. It favours the carrying out of study and didactic activities.
The most relevant feature of the Bosco di Tecchie is the high environmental integrity. Inserted in the oasis of WWF Italy, it shows a noteworthy wealth in fauna and flora. Among the flora many species, rare or of high phytogeographic interest are to be signalled, among which the Roman Orchid (Orchis romana) and the common Ophioglossum (Ophioglossum vugatum). Standing out in the faunistic panorama are the Middle Red Woodpecker (Picoides medius), practically disappeared from all the regional territory, and the Spectacled Salamander (Salamandrina terdigitata), further than the main mammals such as the Wolf (Canis Lupus), the Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus), the Porcupine (Histrix cristata) and the Badger (Meles meles). Among the birds of the wood community are the Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), the Sparrow hawk (Accipiter nisus), the Kite (Buteo buteo), the Bee Hawk (Pernis apivorus).
The Bosco di Tecchie is at a few minutes walking from the Agriturismo Ranco di Sopra.
