Urbino

Already in the Roman era Urbino was fortified, for its strategic position. In the 6th century, during the Byzantine dominaton, it was inserted in the Pentapoli Annonaria (Annonary five-city administration) together with Fossombrone, Iesi, Cagli and Gubbio. In 1213 the Montefeltro, people of germanic origin, received the fief of Urbino from Emperor Frederick. The most splendid time of Urbino began under Federico of Montefeltro; the marvelous Ducal Palace is evidence of that era of magnificence. The son Guidubaldo founded in 1506 the College of Doctors, embryo of the University.

Ideal place for the art and culture of the Renaissance, from Raffaello to Bramante, it has been considered up to the present times the ideal italian renaissance city.
